Final project of 3rd year

Dundee has a successful farmers market but it is only once a month. This project would offer an alternative and a real opportunity for a more sustainable platform. The markets would be formed by and ran as a co-operative of farmers. This will give them opportunity and change to actually sell their produce and a viable sense, giving them the chance to compete with near by Tesco for customers. To make the project more economical it would act as a social and community space, with its multifunctional layout being open to use as an exhibition and educational space.

Hotel

This project was to design a 5 star hotel room with an interactive twist.

Trip to Lugano, Switzerland

Following the Whinny Brae project, 6 teams were selected to represent the department in a GIDE confrence, which is a collective of Interior Design courses from around Europe. This conference consisted of lectures and workshops and the oppertunity to visit Lugano. The main event was the final workshop in which we were split into groups made up of members from all the different schools. The task was to make a display of a site or an object from the site we had visited in Lugano. This was great fun as I had an excellent group of people to work with.

Whinny Brae

Whinny Brae project was a group project that was very easy to get involved with as the brief was challenging yet very interesting and exciting.

Whinny Park is an innovative, exciting space designed for the whole community. It is not just about a journey from A to B but now about Fun, Education and Self sufficiency. Creating three pods staggered up the hill there are new and interesting spaces for all the community of Broughty Ferry to enjoy.

The Glass House will be a communal garden for keen gardeners and also a useful space for Eastern Primary and cross curriculum education. It is a space that children of all ages can understand and grow their own plants and fruit and vegetables. The suspended glass pond to the back of the glass house also acts as a water collector, contributing to its self sufficiency. It is heated and lit at night by solar gain during the day.

The Teaching zone offers an alternative space to the classroom to help enthuse and inspire, providing a space in keeping with modern teaching methods. It has been greatly inspired by the whaling history of the area. The tall whale bone like structure acts as a semi shelter and creates a classroom like space that can be used by various groups within the community, Eastern Primary and Girl Guide or Scout Groups as well as any adult organisations.

The Play zone provides a space for use by the parents and children of Eastern Primary School. It is somewhere parents can drop their children or wait for them after school. Using rubber mounds and a climbing wall on the back curve creates a fun environment. A raised level crossing leading from the play zone to the other side of the road provides a safe place for children to cross. The use of grass and integrated mesh has an impact on drivers speed as it is an unfamiliar surface and defines clearly that the space is different and encourages cautious driving.

Second Year

I started my 2nd year after a long summer in which I spent much time renovating my flat. This involved a lot of long days skimming walls and so on with work still continues today. Then there was a very welcome brake traveling in California with the highlight having to be spending a lot of time in the mountains of the seara Nevada. This lead to what was perhaps a slow start to 2nd year with work on going in the flat and my head still roaming around in the mountains.

The first project of second year was to design a Bathing Space. My idea was a large glass box submerged in the river scar i am currently looking out images for this but they seem to have gone a stray.

Next was a great project, it was a furniture project in which we designed and best of all built our pieces. This was our first group project and most enjoyable. I have always really enjoyed working with wood but have not always had much opportunity to do so, so getting into the workshop was a good experience. We decided on a coffee table. We inlaid edges of ply board into solid wood. This created and interesting finish.
Another very enjoyable project was a sustainability project in which we had to design a house and workshop for a Book Conservationist. This project started with us attending book binding courses run by our client.
